On May 27, 1995, Christopher Reeve broke his neck when he was thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia.

The injury paralysed him from the shoulders down, and he used a wheelchair and ventilator for the rest of his life.
The actor then became a crusader for people with spinal cord injuries and also lobbied for government funding of embryonic stem-cell research.

During a speech at the 1996 Academy Awards, Reeve urged the Hollywood community to make more moves about social issues. In addition to fundraising and advocacy work, Reeve wrote two books about his fundraising and advocacy work, Reeve wrote two books about his life experiences and continued his acting career.
