His college career saw him become a six-time NCAA Division I First Team All-American and a three-time NCAA Track and Field Pole Vault champion. Nilsen’s remarkable feats included setting school records for pole vault both indoors, with a height of 5.80 meters (19 feet), and outdoors, with a soaring clearance of 5.86 meters (19 feet 3 inches).

In a stunning display of his abilities, Nilsen set the American and NACAC outdoor pole vault U-20 record at 5.75 meters (18 feet 10 inches), as well as the American and NACAC indoor pole vault U-20 record at 5.70 meters (18 feet 8 inches). His prowess was recognized in accolades like the 2017 Summit League Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and the 2017 Summit League Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.
