On Sunday evening, Sept. 13, 2022, three members of the University of Virginia football were shot and killed on campus, with two others sustaining injuries in a shooting, which occurred on a bus filled with students returning from a field trip.

Police responded to a report of shots fired around 10:30 p.m. in an area near a parking garage on Culbreth Road and surrounded by academic buildings.

Two of the victims died inside the bus, while the third victim was taken to a hospital, where he died.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the shooting at the Charlottesville campus is one of nearly 600 mass shootings in the US this year.

Following the incident, a suspect Christopher Darnell Jones Jr was arrested around 11 a.m. ET about 80 miles east of Charlottesville in Henrico County, the county police agency said in a statement.

The suspect is a student at UVA, where he was a member of the football team in 2018.

The 1.75m tall suspect who hails from Petersburg, where he played linebacker and running back at Petersburg High School for his senior year also has ties to Henrico County, where he spent his first three years of high school at Varina.

His father, Christopher Darnell Jones Sr. said that he was still trying to process the accusations against his son.

The surprised father said;

“I can’t believe it was him. “I still can’t believe it now.”

Around 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, U.S. Marshalls swarmed Jones’ mother’s home with guns drawn to locate him but he was not at home.

His mother was spotted inside her van sobbing with her other children who had gathered around her.

She revealed that she attempted to call Jones several times when she learned of the shooting but was unable to reach him over the phone.
