Chris Smith went to Mount Ulla High School in North Carolina. He had 98 tackles and 16.5 sacks as a senior.
Chris Smith appeared in six games as a true freshman in 2010, recording three tackles. He appeared in 13 games with three starts as a sophomore in 2011.

He finished with 31 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He started all 12 games as a junior in 2012, totalling 52 tackles and 9.5 sacks. In 12 games as a senior in 2013, he had 37 tackles and 8.5 sacks. Smith was a second-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) selection as a senior in 2013.
The Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Chris Smith also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cleveland Browns. Chris Smith signed with the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons on March 9, 2023.
