Choi passed away on June 20, 2023, at age 33. A police report shared by Yonhap indicated that he was found dead in his home at 9:41 am on June 20.
He passed away after sharing a suicide note on his YouTube channel.
After placing second in the 2011 season of Korea’s got talent, Choi bagged a record deal with the Korean label Bong Bong Company and later published a bestselling memoir about his journey from an impoverished youth to internet fame.
Unfortunately, his career took a turn towards infamy in 2021 after he launched a public fundraising campaign saying he was fighting multiple forms of cancer and needed money for treatment, which he later revealed was a hoax.

Choi had a torrid upbringing. He was abandoned at an orphanage when he was three and ran away from the orphanage to escape physical abuse, took a bus to Daejeon, and started living in the red-light districts.
After spending years supporting himself as a day laborer, his big break came in 2011 when he landed a spot on Korea’s Got Talent, broadcast by tvN.
His operatic rendition of Ennio Morricone’s “Nella Fantasia” stunned the judges, and he went to the finals, finishing second by only 280 votes.
The YouTube video of his performance on the show went viral, with K-pop singers such as BoA and Jung-Hwa Um promoting it on social media.
Choi got an even bigger boost when Justin Bieber praised him on his Facebook page, writing, “This is awesome. Never say never, and good luck to this kid. Great story.”
Sadly, Choi failed to live up to the enormous expectations.
