Cheng wasn’t just a musician; he was a poetic force intertwined with the soul of the band. Amid heavy riffs and energetic stage performances, Cheng’s artistry extended beyond – a musical poet who studied English at Sacramento State.
His unique basslines and introspective lyrics injected a soulful energy into Deftones’ sound, creating a sonic landscape that resonated with fans.

Cheng’s creative spirit knew no bounds; he wove spoken word passages into their songs and even ventured into a solo spoken word album, “The Bamboo Parachute,” in 2000.

Cheng’s passions weren’t confined to the stage. A practicing Buddhist with interests in Taoism and Shamanism, he used the proceeds from his album to gift musical instruments to children in Sacramento. His altruism reflected a deep connection to his community.
Tragically, Cheng’s life took a devastating turn in 2008 with a car accident that left him in a coma for years.
Deftones, despite the loss, continues to honor his memory, reminding us of the enduring power of art and compassion, and the lasting mark one person can make in the hearts of many.
