In 1989, Dunstone began selling mobile phones from his flat on Marylebone Road.

He first noticed the potential of mobile phones and the future of mobile communications while working at NEC.

At the time, phones were bulky and cumbersome and were mostly purchased by major corporations and organizations.

Corporate clients were well served, but small firms, self-employed individuals, and the general public had nowhere to turn.

Dunstone anticipated that mobile phones would become widespread and named his company The Carphone Warehouse (CPW) to cater to this broader market.

The firm was listed on the London Stock Exchange in July 2000 and was valued at about £1.7 billion based on an issue price of 200p.
