Charles Dunstone House, Yacht, Five Guys – Sir Charles William Dunstone CVO is the co-founder and former chairman of mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse, as well as the former chairman of multinational electrical and telecommunications retailer and services company Dixons Carphone (formed on 7 August 2014 by the merger of Dixons Retail and Carphone Warehouse).

Dunstone, who was born on November 21, 1964, began selling mobile phones from his flat on Marylebone Road in 1989.

He was 25 years old and had saved £6,000 to start his business, having previously worked as a sales professional at NEC.

He first noticed the potential of mobile phones and the future of mobile communications while working at NEC.

At the time, phones were bulky and cumbersome and were mostly purchased by major corporations and organizations. Corporate clients were well served, but small firms, self-employed individuals, and the general public had nowhere to turn. Dunstone anticipated that mobile phones would become widespread and named his company The Carphone Warehouse (CPW) to cater to this broader market.

The firm was listed on the London Stock Exchange in July 2000 and was valued at about £1.7 billion based on an issue price of 200p.

Carphone Warehouse launched a subsidiary, TalkTalk, in 2003, using assets acquired through the 2002 purchase of Opal Telecom.

In December 2019, Dunstone purchased £10 million worth of shares in TalkTalk, meaning he now owns 29.5% of the company’s stock.

Dunstone was caught in a nasty feud with his neighbors in 2016 after submitting plans to develop a subterranean expansion beneath his £20 million London property.

Dunstone and his wife requested a basement excavation at their six-bedroom Holland Park home in order to make place for a wine cellar, baths, and storage.

Neighbors, on the other hand, slammed the couple’s intention to excavate the soil beneath their home and build a one-story basement, alleging they have already endured enough “noise and pollution.”

Sir Charles Dunstone, the founder of Carphone Warehouse who backed the franchise believes the UK firm can prosper on a dying high street.

According to Dunstone, Five Guys has more than half of what is known as the ‘better burger’ market (hamburgers in the £5 range) in the US.

So far, it has not been a bad investment.
