Chance The Rapper began to gain mainstream recognition in 2013 after releasing his second mixtape, Acid Rap. He then released his third mixtape, Coloring Book in 2016, which garnered further critical acclaim and attention.

In 2019, he wrote the song, True Kinda Love for Steven Universe: The Movie alongside Rebecca Sugar, James Fauntleroy, Macie Stewart and Julian Sanchez, with vocals being performed by Estelle and Zach Callison.
