There is no international standard for counting deaths or their causes, and countries record deaths in a variety of ways, making comparisons difficult. However, experts agree that one of the most accurate measurements is how many more deaths are documented in a country than would be expected in a typical year.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were more than 1 million excess deaths in the US during the epidemic (CDC).

Covid-19, as well as diseases that may have arisen from delayed medical care and overburdened health systems, are mostly to blame for the deaths.

According to the WHO, the United States had more than 930,000 extra deaths in 2020 and 2021, trailing India (4.7 million), Russia (1.1 million), and Indonesia (1.1 million) (1m).

The WHO’s figures are broadly in line with Economist statistics that extend into 2022, as well as other excess death studies.

When the population size is taken into account, the United States falls to last place, with 140 excess deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. However, it is still well over the global average of 96 per 100,000, and it is one of the worst performers among the wealthy countries.
