Carolyn who was 21 years at the time, accused young Till of staring at her lustfully in a grocery shop in August 1955. He was visiting his family in Mississippi when the incident occurred.

Till was also accused by Carolyn of making inappropriate comments and grabbing her at the shop. A few days later, Till was abducted at gunpoint by two white men from his home.
He was severely beaten and dragged to the bank of a river and shot in the head. Till’s body was tied in barbed wires to a heavy metal fan before being dumped into the river. His corpse was completely disfigured when they pulled it out of the river.
Carolyn’s husband, Roy Bryant, and brother JW Milam were later charged with regard to the kidnap of Till in an arrest that took place in 1955. They were both acquitted of murder by an all-White jury following the trail in which Carolyn testified that Till grabbed and verbally threatened her.

However, Carolyn did not face any charges as the authorities stated that they “didn’t want to bother” her because she had two children to take care of.
During an interview with Look Magazine in 1956, Roy and Milan admitted to the killing of Till. Milam died in 1980 and Roy died of cancer in 1994.
Malik Shabazz who is with the Black Lawyers for Justice shared after Carolyn’s death that, it is very painful that she never faced real justice for her crime.
“Carolyn Bryant’s death brings a conclusion to a painful chapter for the Emmett Till family and for Black people in America. The tragic part about Bryant’s death was that she was never held accountable for her role in the death of young Emmett Till, who is the martyr for the Civil Rights Movement,” he said.
A Leflore County in Mississippi grand jury rejected to indict Carolyn because they claimed there was “insufficient evidence to indict her on charges of kidnapping and manslaughter.”
“After hearing every aspect of the investigation and evidence collected regarding Carolyn Bryant’s involvement, the Grand Jury returned a ‘No Bill’ to the charges of both Kidnapping and Manslaughter,” the statement read.
