Aherne’s journey began in Ealing, London, and later flourished in the vibrant city of Manchester. Raised in Wythenshawe from the age of two, she overcame childhood challenges, including partial sight in one eye due to retinoblastoma. Aherne attended the Hollies Convent FCJ School in West Didsbury before pursuing her passion for drama at Liverpool Polytechnic.

Undoubtedly, Aherne’s magnum opus is “The Royle Family,” a sitcom co-created, written, and directed by Aherne. The show, running from 1998 to 2000, provided an authentic and humorous portrayal of a working-class British family. Aherne’s role as Denise Royle showcased her ability to connect with audiences and earned her BAFTA awards for Best Sitcom and Best Comedy Performance.

Aherne’s versatility extended to “The Fast Show,” where she collaborated with Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson, portraying various characters, including the memorable “Our Janine” and “Chanel 9 meteorologist Poula Fisch.”
Despite moments of media retreat, Aherne continued to contribute to the comedy landscape. In 2006, “The Royle Family: The Queen of Sheba” demonstrated her enduring comedic brilliance. She co-wrote “The Fattest Man in Britain” and contributed to the ITV comedy-drama “The Security Men.” Aherne’s final on-screen appearance came in the Sky One show “After Hours,” a testament to her enduring partnership with Craig Cash.
