The journey through Aherne’s mental health struggles commenced before the iconic “The Royle Family” graced television screens. In July 1998, grappling with depression, she confronted the profound loss of her former boyfriend, BBC technician Matt Bowers, to stomach cancer in 1997. Simultaneously, the end of a relationship with American actor Alexis Denisof compounded the weight on her shoulders. These emotional upheavals culminated in a suicide attempt, marking a pivotal moment in Aherne’s tumultuous battle with inner demons.

Seeking solace and support, Aherne sought refuge in the Priory, where her condition was diagnosed as binge alcoholism. This pivotal period marked the beginning of her public journey to confront mental health challenges and addiction, shining a light on the often unseen struggles beneath the surface of fame.

The path ahead for Aherne was fraught with health complications. Her battles extended to physical ailments, including bladder cancer and a rare cancer of the retina. In 2014, she courageously embarked on a treatment program for lung cancer, revealing the depth of her resilience in facing life’s adversities. Despite her personal struggles, Aherne maintained a sense of humor, even becoming a vocal advocate for cancer care initiatives, notably participating in the Macmillan Cancer Improvement Partnership in 2014.

As the years unfolded, Aherne’s health became a central focus, yet her indomitable spirit persisted. In 2016, she took on the role of the voice behind the UK government’s “One You” health campaign, emphasizing the importance of lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of health issues.

On the morning of 2 July 2016, at the age of 52, Aherne succumbed to lung cancer at her home in Timperley. Her passing marked the end of a journey marked by remarkable resilience and a dedication to raising awareness about health challenges. Aherne had shared her terminal diagnosis with family and close friends in May, facing the final chapter with characteristic courage.
