Leah Van Dale was born on October 23, 1987, in Spencer, Massachusetts, the United States of America. Carmella graduated from David Prouty High School and later from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 2010.
Carmella signed a contract with WWE in June 2013 and was assigned to their developmental brand in Orlando, Florida. In July 2016, she made her main roster debut on SmackDown.

Carmella made her video game debut as a playable character in WWE 2K17, subsequently appearing in WWE 2K18, WWE 2K19, WWE 2K20, WWE 2K Battlegrounds, WWE 2K22, and WWE 2K23.
Carmella is a certified fitness instructor and a personal trainer. In April 2018, Carmella became the first woman in WWE history to successfully cash in her Money in the Bank opportunity, when she defeated Charlotte Flair to win the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship.
