Carlos Ortiz, a Puerto Rican boxing legend, died in New York on Monday, June 13 2022. He was 85 years old. His death occurred the day after he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in three classes.  His cause of death has not been disclosed

Ortiz has been a frequent fixture since his admission in 1991, and the World Boxing Organization acknowledged his tragic death.

“The WBO family mourns the loss of great Lightweight and Junior Welterweight champion Carlos Ortiz,” they said. “Ortiz was one of the best and most popular fighters of the 1960s, having been born in Ponce and raised in New York. “May you rest in peace.” k. is 85 years old.

Ortiz was born in Puerto Rico and migrated to New York when he was 18 years old. He won the world title at light-welterweight just four years later, in 1959.

Ortiz moved down to lightweight in 1962, winning the WBA belt and then the WBC title.
His final fight was in 1972, when he lost to Scottish legend Ken Buchanan in New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden, capping a spectacular 17-year career.
