On May 11, 1936, in Oakland, California, the United States, Lovella May Borg gave birth to Carla Bley.
Bley was a well-known jazz conductor, pianist, organist, and composer in the United States until her death on October 17, 2023.

She continued to be regarded as a significant contributor to the 1960s free jazz movement. Variety reported that Bley launched many record labels, including Watt and JCOA Records. She also started the nonprofit New Music Distribution Service, which helped her labels reach a wider audience.

According to the Times, she first heard jazz when she was 12 years old while at a Lionel Hampton concert.

With her second husband, trumpeter Mike Mantler, she co-founded the ensemble The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra (JCO) in 1965 and the nonprofit distributor New Music Distribution Service in 1972. Within a few years, she also established herself as a recording artist in her own right.
