American jazz pianist, bandleader, composer, and organist Carla Bley passed away on October 17, 2023. She was a significant figure in the 1960s free jazz movement and is best known for her jazz opera Escalator over the Hill, which was released as a triple LP set. She also wrote a book of compositions that were performed by a variety of musicians, including Gary Burton, Jimmy Giuffre, George Russell, Art Farmer, John Scofield, and her ex-husband Paul Bley.

A number of musicians started to record Bley’s compositions: Paul Bley’s Barrage was entirely composed of her works; Jimmy Giuffre recorded “Ictus” on his album Thesis; George Russell recorded “Bent Eagle” for his album Stratusphunk in 1960.
