Carl Hahn died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, 14 January 2023 at the age of 96. This was confirmed by a DPA news agency spokeswoman for the Hahn Foundation.

Carl Hahn grew up in the German state of Saxony, near Chemnitz. Hahn began his career at Volkswagen in 1954 as Head of Export Promotion. He led VW’s American division from 1959 to 1964.

During his tenure as CEO of Volkswagen, Carl Hahn laid the groundwork for the global corporation. Hahn also spearheaded the company’s entry into China.

The group’s car production increased from two million units in 1982 to 3.5 million a decade later.

Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991, Volkswagen formed a joint venture with the Czech company Škoda Auto.
