Palm Sunday commemorates and honours Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem a week before his crucifixion. People came and placed palm branches and their cloaks over Jesus’ path as he rode into town on a donkey, saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”

It’s also notable since it fulfilled prophecies from the Old Testament. For instance, Jesus went into town on a donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9.

On Palm Sunday, you can eat meat. During Lent, Sundays are still Resurrection celebrations. On Fridays during Lent, the traditional form of Lenten penance is abstinence from meat.

On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, fasting is observed, which means abstaining from meat and eating only one meal with two smaller snacks that do not equal the size of the main meal.

Red is worn on Palm Sunday in honour of the Lord’s Passion.
