Can you drink alcohol on Maundy Thursday? Do you wear black on Maundy Thursday?

Maundy Thursday commemorates the events leading up to Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. Apart from fasting, most Christians abstain from consuming alcohol, eating meat, and having sexual relations with their spouses. The re-enactment of the Last Supper, which is organised by churches, is the climax of Maundy Thursday.

There is no prohibition against drinking, including alcoholic beverages during this period. However, in a spirit of penance, alcohol is discouraged

The word ‘Maundy’ comes from Latin and means ‘command.’ During Jesus’ supper with his disciples, he informed them: “I give you a new command: Love one another. You must love one another as much as I have loved you.” 13:34 (KJV).

Jesus also told his disciples to think of him as they ate bread and drank wine at the same meal. This is a significant event for Christians, and it is commemorated in the Christian ceremony known as Communion, Mass, or Eucharist.

After the Liturgy in the evening, all of the hangings and vestments are changed to black or a dark colour to symbolise the start of the Passion. The Holy Passion ceremony of the reading of the Twelve Gospels is held in anticipation of Morning mass on Friday.
