The Academy has banned Will Smith from attending the Oscars for the next ten years after he slapped Chris Rock at last month’s ceremony.

Smith can still be nominated for the prestigious award, but he will not be able to accept it in person – or virtually – if he wins another.
Smith, who won his first Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in King Richard earlier this year, might still be considered for future awards, according to The Washington Post.
The ban has did not affect his eligibility, and he will be able to keep the award he received last month. Smith resigned from the Academy on April 1, just five days after slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars in Los Angeles on March 27.

The Academy board met to decide Smith’s fate yesterday.
In an open letter, Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson revealed that Smith would be banned from attending the Oscars and other Academy events, in person as well as virtually, for 10 years.
“This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behaviour is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy,” they wrote. “We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted
