Russ Bray is just a darts referee who works for the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). Russ Bray’s calling career began one night when the regular caller failed to show up for a county match.

As for his mathematical abilities, Bray has mentioned that he was always good at maths tests at school 3. As a referee, he has to add every score up, whereas a player will hit double 18 and know what he needs.
A player subtracts numbers but referees have to add it up and take it away, which is the subtle difference. Russ Bray has called eight televised nine-darters, including the first-ever televised nine-darter outside of Europe by Mervyn King in Johannesburg, South Africa.

On November 21, 2023, Russ Bray announced that he will be retiring at the end of the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship, but will continue to work with the PDC as an ambassador.
