This momentous achievement included victories in the National Junior Championship (both stroke play and match play), the National Amateur Championship, and the prestigious Colombian Open in the amateur category. His prowess continued to soar, and in 2001, he became only the second player to triumph at the Colombian Open as an amateur.
His dominance in Colombian golf during the 1990s garnered him the revered title of “Player of the Decade,” bestowed upon him by the Colombian Golf Federation, a testament to his exceptional skill and dominance within the local golfing circuit.
Following his resounding success on the Colombian golfing stage, Villegas embarked on a career in professional golf. He made his foray onto the PGA Tour in 2004 and, just before the 2006 season, secured his PGA Tour card, marking the commencement of a career that would see him as a prominent figure on some of the world’s most challenging golf courses.
