C. J. Beathard went to Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tennessee where he played high school football for the Battle Ground Academy Wildcats. He made his collegiate debut against Western Michigan on September 21, 2013.
In the 2015 season, C. J. Beathard was instrumental in leading the Iowa Hawkeyes football team to an undefeated 12–0 record during the regular season; he passed for 2,570 yards, 14 touchdowns, and three interceptions.
