Born on 8 March 1982, Charles Donald Bateman, better known as Don Bateman, was a Canadian electrical engineer who invented the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS).

Bateman graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in electrical engineering before starting his career at Sundstrand Company (later Honeywell). Bateman spent most of his career at Honeywell as Chief Engineer, Flight Safety Avionics.

Throughout his career, he created creative and cost-effective avionic flight technologies.

His most notable achievement, however, was inventing the initial Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) in the late 1960s.

The GPWS is a device that has been blamed for a significant decrease in controlled flight into terrain incidents, such as the Mount Erebus Tragedy involving Air New Zealand Flight 901.

The impact of GPWs has been so great that the United States now requires their installation on turbine aircraft carrying six or more passengers.

Bateman continued to work on the GPWS, transforming it into the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning Systems (EGPWS), which addressed the GPWS’s limitations by including GPS in its terrain analysis.

As a result, EGPWS can estimate the aircraft’s course and the terrain ahead of the aircraft for several miles. Computerized terrain maps with dangerous obstructions and features alert the pilot when it is time to pull up.

Don Bateman passed away on 21 May 2023 at age 91.
