A tragic road accident involving a red Scania Marcopolo bus with registration number GW 9090-18 has led to multiple fatalities and injuries on the Accra to Kumasi highway.

The incident occurred early Friday, May 24 2024 morning around 4:00 am at Atwemamena, a community between Bunso and Akyem Asafo in the Eastern Region.
The bus, traveling from Kumasi towards Accra, collided with a truck heading in the opposite direction.
Eyewitnesses described the accident as severe, with reports of several passengers, including the bus driver and mate, losing their lives.
One witness recounted seeing a severed leg in the mangled front of the bus. Victims have been rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital for emergency care.

This tragic event adds to a concerning trend in Ghana, where road crashes remain alarmingly frequent. In the first quarter of this year alone, 4,503 road accidents were recorded, resulting in 829 deaths and 4,955 injuries.
In response to these grim statistics, the Orthopaedic Association of Ghana (OAG) has urged the government to implement comprehensive trauma care systems and enforce stringent road safety measures.
During its 4th Annual General and Scientific Conference at Kwahu on May 16, the OAG emphasized the importance of timely and effective treatment for trauma patients, strict enforcement of road traffic laws, promotion of helmet and seat belt use, and improvements in road infrastructure to enhance safety for all road users.
