Burkey Belser, a graphic designer who invented the omnipresent nutrition data label—a stark rectangle displaying calories, fat, sodium, and other content information—passed away on September 25 at his home in Bethesda, Maryland. He was 76.

His wife Donna Greenfield, with whom he co-founded the Washington, D.C., design firm Greenfield/Belser, claimed that bladder cancer was the reason of his death. When the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act was passed in 1994, Mr. Belser’s bold, light Helvetica-typed nutrition data label was hailed as a victory of public health and graphic design.

Following his success with the black and yellow energy recommendation label for appliances, the Food and Drug Administration selected Mr. Belser to design the nutrition label.
