An advertisement for a burger van that made fun of the Madeleine McCann case and ran on Mother’s Day has been banned for offending.

On March 27, posts on The Otley Burger Company’s social media sites stated, “Burgers for dinner?” above photographs of Madeleine and her mother Kate McCann, with further text suggesting, “With burgers this amazing, you’ll leave your kids at home.”

In the distance, a man can be seen running with a smaller image of Madeleine in his hands, followed by the statement, “Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there.”

Three complaints were received by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) alleging that the advertisements were likely to cause distress and serious or widespread offence.

The ASA stated that the nature of the post was so concerning that it requested that the relevant social media networks – Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook – remove the content and suspend the account pending its investigation.

Madeleine went missing from her family’s apartment in 2007 while on holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal, just days before her fourth birthday. The advert was deemed insensitive.
