Derrel McKinley “Bud” Harrelson was an American professional baseball shortstop, coach, and manager. He played for the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and Texas Rangers from 1965 to 1980.

This throwback jersey was worn by Harrelson in 2006 as the New York Mets celebrated the 20th anniversary of their 1986 World Championship season.

Gold Glove

He won a National League Gold Glove Award in 1971 for his fielding, appeared in two All-Star Games, and was inducted into the Mets’ Hall of Fame.

After a two-year minor league stint with Salinas and a year in Buffalo, (Bud) Harrelson got that first cup of coffee late in the 1965 season. The Mets were playing the Braves in Milwaukee. County Stadium wasn’t exactly packed. The Mets were closing in on 100 losses for the fourth consecutive year since their inception, and the Braves were playing out the string before relocating to Atlanta in 1966.

But there was the new kid at shortstop, all 147 pounds of him, chasing a foul pop-up down the third base line, jumping over the tarp, and making the catch in the stands.
