Bud Clark was an American politician and businessman who served as Mayor of Portland, Oregon, from 1985 to 1992.

John Elwood Clark Jr was born on December 19, 1931, in Nampa, Idaho, United States. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1949, before enlisting in the Marines and attending college at Vanport College (now Portland State University).

Bud Clark attended Oregon State University and Reed College where he dropped out in his junior year. He ran for mayor against Frank Ivancie in 1984, and won in the primary on May 15, 1984, with 54.7% of the vote.

Bud Clark was “officially” elected mayor on November 6, 1984, and his term had begun on January 2, 1985. He was re-elected in 1988 after defeating 11 candidates in the primary and beating former Chief of Police Ron Still in the general.

Bud Clark had little political experience before running for mayor, however, he remains one of Portland’s most colourful political figures.

Bud Clark died from congestive heart failure on February 1, 2022, at the age of 90.
