Johnson founded Braintree while still a graduate student. Annual credit card processing revenue exceeds $8 billion, with $2 billion coming from mobile devices. It was ranked 47th on the Inc. 500 list in 2011.
In 2013, Johnson sold Braintree to eBay for $800 million. He has been named to Crain’s 40 Under 40 list, as well as the annual Tech 25 and Tech 50 lists.

In October 2014, he announced the launch of his new $100 million venture OS, which will invest in inventors and scientists with the goal of benefiting humanity through new discoveries.
