Bruce Nordstrom, a pivotal figure in the growth and success of the Seattle-based retail giant Nordstrom, passed away on Saturday morning, May 18, 2024, at the age of 90, at his home in Seattle.

A member of the third generation of Nordstrom family leadership, Bruce played a significant role in expanding the company’s footprint from a regional to a national retailer.
Under his guidance, Nordstrom experienced substantial growth, including its expansion into California in the 1970s, a move that proved instrumental in its national success.
Bruce’s commitment to Nordstrom was matched only by his dedication to his family and community.
His sons, Pete and Erik Nordstrom, the current president and chief executive officer of the company respectively, praised their father’s unwavering dedication in a statement, highlighting his passion, integrity, and tireless work ethic.
They also emphasized his role as a loving father, husband, and grandfather, which they considered his greatest achievement.

After retiring as co-chairman in 1995, Bruce continued to serve on Nordstrom’s board until the mid-2000s.

During this time, he oversaw the launch of the company’s online sales platform in the late 1990s, a pivotal moment in Nordstrom’s evolution into the digital age. He ultimately retired as chairman of the board in 2006.
Reflecting on Nordstrom’s expansion into California, Bruce recalled facing skepticism from industry experts who doubted the company’s ability to succeed in a more sophisticated market. Despite these challenges, Nordstrom’s vision and determination prevailed, cementing its position as a leading retailer on the national stage.
Beyond his contributions to Nordstrom, Bruce was actively involved in various philanthropic endeavors, serving as president of the Downtown Seattle Association, Children’s Hospital Foundation, and Seattle Goodwill. He also chaired the United Way of King County Campaign in 1984.
Bruce Nordstrom is survived by his wife Jeannie, his sister Anne Gittinger, his sons Pete and Erik, daughters-in-law Brandy, Julie, and Molly, and seven grandchildren: Alex, Andy, Leigh, Sam, Sara, Micki, and Chet. His family noted that Jeannie was by his side when he passed, underscoring the importance of family in Bruce’s life.
