Brian Kemp is a Republican, and he was the 27th secretary of state of Georgia from 2010 to 2018 and a member of the Georgia State Senate from 2003 until 2007.
Kemp is a graduate of the University of Georgia and prior to entering politics, he owned several agribusinesses, financial services, and real estate companies.
Kemp was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 2002.
In 2010, Kemp was appointed secretary of state of Georgia by Governor Sonny Perdue following the resignation of Karen Handel to run for the governorship.
Kemp was subsequently elected to a full term as Georgia secretary of state in 2010; he was reelected in 2014.
In 2018, Kemp was a candidate for governor, where he faced Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams.
However, a few weeks before the election, Kemp was criticized for putting 53,000 voter registration applications on hold, with 70% of the applicants being African American.

Also, Kemp refused to resign as secretary of state while campaigning for governor, which stirred controversy and accusations of abuse of power.

Following the general election on November 6, Kemp was declared the winner with 50.2% of the vote, and resigned as secretary of state on November 8.
Then, in October 2018, Atlanta television station WAGA-TV reported that companies owned by Kemp owed more than $800,000 in loans to a community bank where he is a founding board member and stockholder.
However, such “insider loans” are deemed legal, so long as they are on the same terms as the bank would extend to any other borrower.
Kemp’s campaign declined to publicize the terms of the loan.
According to AJC, Kemp’s financial report reveals his wealth has grown by more than $3 million since he took office in 2019, bringing his net worth to an estimated $10 million.
