The Denver Nuggets’ longtime NBA coach Brendan Malone passed away at the age of 81. Malone, a native of New York City, advanced through the coaching ranks from head coach of prep powerhouse Power Memorial Academy (1970–76) to three different collegiate assistant coaching positions before being chosen head coach at Rhode Island, where he compiled a 17–39 record.

From 1988 until 1995, while serving as an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons, he developed a system that was intended to stop Michael Jordan. This approach helped the Pistons defeat the Chicago Bulls in the playoffs and capture NBA titles in 1989 and 1990.

Along with Indiana, Cleveland, and Orlando, he served as a coaching assistant there as well.
Malone was sacked as the Toronto Raptors’ inaugural head coach after one season and a 21-61 record.

Maureen and Brendan Malone were married, and the two of them have six kids. Malone only served as the Raptors’ head coach for one season (21-61), but during that time, he handed them one of the Bulls’ championship team’s rare losses. Malone worked as an assistant coach for the Seattle SuperSonics, Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, and Detroit Pistons after leaving the Raptors.
