Brendan Malone obituary

At the age of 81, Denver Nuggets longtime NBA coach Brendan Malone passed away. Malone, a native of New York City, advanced from leading prep powerhouse Power Memorial Academy (1970–76) to three assistant coaching positions at colleges before being chosen head coach at Rhode Island, where he compiled a 17–39 record.

He developed a system to stop Michael Jordan while serving as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons from 1988 to 1995. This approach helped the Pistons defeat the Chicago Bulls in the playoffs and capture NBA titles in 1989 and 1990.

In addition to Indiana, Cleveland, and Orlando, he served as a coaching assistant.
Malone was the inaugural head coach of the Toronto Raptors upon their expansion, however he was let go after one season and a 21-61 record.
