From 1970 through 1976, Brendan Malone, a native of New York City, served as the head coach of the prosperous Power Memorial Academy. Before taking over at Rhode Island, where he had a 17-39 record, he then worked as an assistant coach for a number of collegiate basketball programs.

Malone made the transition to the NBA when he joined the New York Knicks coaching staff in 1986. This was the start of a 30-year career in the league.
