Borje Salming earned $271,000 in his final season with the Maple Leafs between 1988 and 1989. His starting salary was US$70,000 when he first signed with the team during the 1973-74 season.

He was a top defensive player in the NHL at the time. He is remembered today for his lengthy tenure with the Maple Leafs. He not only had the most assists, but he also set other team records.

He may have reached the pinnacle of his career at the 1976 Canada Cup, which was held at Maple Leaf Gardens.

Salming received a long-standing ovation during the Team Sweden vs. Team USA player introductions.

Salming also made an important contribution to Sweden’s international play, being named to the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Centennial All-Star Team (IIHF).

In addition, he was named one of the “100 Greatest NHL Players” (6 feet 1 inch) in history in 2017.
