Borisa Simanic Injury
The Serbian Basketball Federation announced Monday that forward Borisa Simanic has lost one of his kidneys as the result of an injury sustained during a World Cup game against South Sudan.

Simanic has been operated on twice in Manila, the team said.
Additional complications presented themselves after the first surgery, team doctor Dragan Radovanovic said, requiring the second procedure on Sunday where the kidney was removed.

“It was really tough for us when we heard what happened,” Serbian forward Nikola Milutinov told reporters after the team practiced Monday. “First, we didn’t believe it was such a bad thing. It’s really affected us. We’re really praying for him that he’s going to be good as soon as possible.”
Simanic was injured with just less than two minutes left in Serbia’s win over South Sudan on Wednesday. South Sudan’s Nuni Omot was trying to score under the basket, elbowing Simanic in that process. Simanic yelled in obvious pain, then fell to his knees a few seconds later.

Simanic’s injury shook the Serbian squad. he was not trying to cause an injury. Milutinov said it has shaken the Serbian team deeply.
“We didn’t sleep after that game. We were trying to find blood for him because he was losing a lot of blood,” Milutinov said. “It was really a tough moment for everybody. I hope this will never happen to anybody in the world.”

A Serbian player has had a kidney removed after taking an elbow to his midsection during a game against South Sudan at the Basketball World Cup.
The Serbian Basketball Federation confirmed on Monday that Borisa Simanic underwent two separate surgeries. The first came after last Wednesday’s game during which Simanic fell to the floor after taking an elbow from South Sudan’s Nuni Omot.

However, the Serbian team said that “due to changes in kidney tissue vitality, the entire kidney had to be surgically removed” in a second operation on Sunday. There were also issues finding the correct blood type for the 25-year-old. His teammate had volunteered to donate their own blood.
The Serbian team doctor, Dragan Radovanovic, said Simanic will remain in a Manila hospital for some time as he recovers. The tournament is being co-hosted by the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan.
Omot issued an apology for the incident after Wednesday’s game.
“My apologies, I didn’t mean to make any type of a dirty play. I hope you have a speedy recovery. I pray for you, you’ll be in my prayers,” Omot said. “I’m not a dirty player, I’ve never been a dirty player. From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely apologize to everyone who’s watching and to the player especially.”
Simanic has played for clubs in Serbia and Spain and had a spell with the Utah Jazz’s summer league team in 2022. Serbia plays Lithuania in the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Tuesday.
