Bono Wife: Meet Ali Hewson

Alison Hewson is a businesswoman and activist from Ireland. She is the wife of Bono, the lead singer and guitarist for the rock band U2.

Ali Hewson met her future husband at Mount Temple Comprehensive School when she was 12 years old.

Ali Hewson married Bono on August 31, 1982. in a Church of Ireland ceremony at All Saints Church, Raheny.

The ceremony incorporated rituals from both traditional Protestantism and the Shalom Friendship group, to which Bono and other U2 members had belonged.

The couple has four children and has homes in Ireland, France, and the United States. She was the inspiration for several U2 songs, most notably “Sweetest Thing.”

Hewson, Bono, and designer Rogan Gregory co-founded the EDUN fashion label in 2005. It was intended to promote positive change in Africa through a fair trade relationship rather than through direct aid.

In 1989, she graduated from University College Dublin (UCD) with a degree in politics and sociology.

Alison Hewson has been a patron of Chernobyl Children’s Project International since 1994 and has taken part in several aid missions to Belarus’ high-radiation exclusion zones. She has also advocated against Sellafield, the nuclear facility in northern England.
