Gary Alan: Overcoming Challenges with Grace

Gary Alan, Monkhouse’s eldest son, faced the challenges of cerebral palsy with remarkable grace. Living at Naish Farm House, a residential home for the disabled in New Milton, Hampshire, Gary attended Saint Michael’s School in Pinner. Despite the hurdles posed by his condition, Gary carved his path in life, a testament to resilience and the unwavering support of a loving family. Tragically, Gary Alan passed away in Braintree, Essex, in 1992 at the age of 40, leaving behind memories of a life bravely lived.

Simon: A Poet’s Soul

Monkhouse’s second son, Simon, followed a different path—one intertwined with the world of poetry and stand-up. However, their journey was marked by a 13-year estrangement, a period of separation that added complexities to their relationship. Simon’s life took an unfortunate turn, and he succumbed to a heroin overdose in a hotel in northern Thailand in April 2001. The echoes of his poetic soul lingered, leaving behind a poignant reminder of the fragility of life.

Abigail: The Survivor

Among Monkhouse’s children, only his adopted daughter, Abigail, survived him. While the details of Abigail’s life remain more private, her presence undoubtedly adds layers of love and connection to Monkhouse’s familial tapestry. In the face of loss and challenges, Abigail emerged as a survivor, carrying forward the legacy of her iconic father.

Bob Monkhouse: A Champion for the Disabled

Beyond the personal narratives of his children, Monkhouse was an avid campaigner for the disabled. His advocacy work reflected a deep commitment to making a difference in the lives of those facing physical and cognitive challenges. In remembering Monkhouse, we not only celebrate his contributions to entertainment but also his enduring impact as a compassionate advocate.
