Bob McGrath Obituary

Bob McGrath was a children’s author, singer, and actor from the United States.
McGrath was born in Ottawa, Illinois on June 13, 1932. McGrath graduated from the University of Michigan’s School of Music in 1954.

Following graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he spent two years in Germany booking and performing with the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra.

In 1959, McGrath earned a Master of Music degree in Voice from Manhattan School of Music.

He was best known for his role as the original human character Bob Johnson on Sesame Street, a long-running educational television series.

McGrath, who first appeared in the series pilot in 1969, played the friendly neighbor Bob Johnson, and remained a “Sesame Street” mainstay for five decades and 47 seasons of broadcast television.

His final series appearance was in 2017, but McGrath’s association with the show did not end there, as he continued to make public appearances at “Sesame Street”-related events.

McGrath appeared in several of the show’s most memorable sequences, including musical performances of “People in Your Neighborhood.”

Bob McGrath died on Sunday, December 4, 2022. He was 90. His death was announced by family members on social media: “He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.
