Robert Nesta Marley OM a Jamaican singer, musician, and songwriter who was considered one of the pioneers of reggae’s life was cut short when died of acral lentiginous melanoma in May 1981 at the age of 36.

Marley was diagnosed with a type of malignant melanoma under a toenail in July 1977. He had to see two doctors before getting a biopsy, which revealed that he had acral lentiginous melanoma. Despite his illness, he continued to tour and was planning a worldwide tour for 1980.

Marley boarded a plane for Jamaica after eight months of failing to effectively treat his advancing cancer.  Marley’s vital functions deteriorated during the flight. He was taken to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital (later University of Miami Hospital) for immediate medical attention after landing in Miami, Florida, where he died.

Marley’s contributions to music elevated the importance of Jamaican music around the world, and he remains a global cultural figure to this day. Marley established himself as a Rastafari icon throughout his career, infusing spirituality into his music.
