Bill Hayden: Former governor-general dies aged 90

At the age of 90, former Labor leader and governor general Bill Hayden passed away. Hayden, who was born in 1933 in Brisbane’s inner-north, dropped out of school at the age of 16, performed a variety of occupations, including that of a police officer, and then, in 1961, at the age of 28, after Labor had won the Queensland seat of Oxley, he was elected to the federal legislature.

When Malcolm Fraser of the Liberal Party was in office as prime minister from 1977 to 1983, Hayden advanced to the role of Labor party leader and led the opposition during that time. Early in 1983, he resigned as Labor leader after the party made it obvious that Bob Hawke, who would soon be elected prime minister, was the chosen candidate.

Bill Hayden, who was Australia’s 21st governor-general before serving as a minister under Gough Whitlam and Bob Hawke, passed away at the age of 90.

Bill Hayden, a former governor-general and federal Labor leader, has away at the age of 90. He is being hailed as a great Australian.

From 1977 until 1983, Mr. Hayden served as the leader of Labor in opposition. He then became Bob Hawke’s government’s foreign minister.
