Australian politician William Hayden, who died on October 21, 1993, was Australia’s 21st governor-general from 1989 to 1996. From 1977 to 1983, he served as the Labor Party’s leader and leader of the opposition. He also served as Bob Hawke’s minister of foreign affairs and trade from 1983 to 1988 and as Gough Whitlam’s treasurer of Australia in 1975.

After graduating from Brisbane State High School, he joined the Queensland Police and served as a police officer for eight years while also taking night classes at the University of Queensland to study economics. Along with Manfred Cross and Doug McClelland, Hayden was the first elected Labor MP who was still living at the time of his passing. Hayden was 28 when he was elected to the House of Representatives in the federal election of 1961.

In 1960, he wed Dallas Broadfoot, with whom he had four kids. They were united in matrimony for 63 years. After being hit by a car, their oldest daughter Michaela passed away in 1966 at the age of five.
After a successful career as a politician, Bob Hawke chose Hayden to be the next governor-general. It was a historic occasion because Hayden was the first previous Labor leader to receive this recognition.
