Campbell spent 15 seasons in the major leagues with seven different teams, the most notable of which were his years with the Red Sox from 1977 to 1981.

In retirement, he lived in the Chicago, Illinois area. He also coached for the Red Sox and volunteered as a coach for youth baseball leagues.
