Bill Campbell, a longtime major league relieve passed away on January 6, 2023, after a battle with cancer, according to multiple reports. He was 74 years old.

Bill Campbell spent 15 seasons in the major leagues with seven different teams, the most notable of which were his years with the Red Sox from 1977 to 1981.

He also spent time with the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Detroit Tigers, and Montreal Expos, among others.

Bill Campbell had his best year in 1977, when he was named to the American League All-Star team. Campbell went 13-9 with a 2.96 ERA and 31 saves, good for first in the American League. He came in fifth place in the Cy Young voting.

The 1977 and 1978 seasons were significant in Red Sox history because they built large leads in the American League East in both. They eventually fell out of first place both years, and the rival New York Yankees won the division both times.

Campbell joined the Red Sox as a free agent, and after his time in Boston ended, he signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago Cubs in late 1981, and he played for the Cubs in 1982.

In retirement, he lived in the Chicago, Illinois area. He also coached for the Red Sox and volunteered as a coach for youth baseball leagues.
