People who have products from Big Olaf Creamery, which is based in Sarasota, should discard them, according to the CDC.

In addition to removing the ice cream from your home, people should clean any areas, containers, or serving utensils that may have come into contact with the products, according to a statement issued by the CDC on Saturday, July 2.

The CDC issued similar advice to retail locations that sell Big Olaf ice cream, advising them to discontinue sales “until further notice.”

Listeriosis is a severe form of food poisoning caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, which is commonly found in soil and water.

When milk from infected cows is used, dairy products, including ice cream, can become contaminated. Listeria bacteria are resistant to refrigeration and even freezing.
