From 1973 to 2000, Baroness Betty Boothroyd, a well-known British politician, held the office of Member of Parliament (MP) for West Bromwich and West Bromwich West. ‘I’ve been advised many times that I need the experience of raising children and standing at a kitchen sink.’ Boothroyd’s political experience, however, led to her appointment as Deputy Speaker in 1987. She worked for Speaker Bernard Weatherill, who retired in 1992.
