Elizabeth Frances Rigby was born in 1976, in Colchester, Essex, United Kingdom. She was brought up in Buckinghamshire. She attended a girls’ grammar school called Beaconsfield High School. Her father was a businessman while her mother was a headteacher.

Beth Rigby’s mother died of lung cancer at the age of 62. Beth lost her brother Alex to thymic carcinoma at the age of 42. She graduated with a first in social and political science from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. She obtained her master’s degree in economics and development studies from the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of London.
