Thompson attended Hinds County public schools before earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Tougaloo College in 1968 and an Master of Science in educational administration from Jackson State University in 1973.

Thompson was a schoolteacher in Madison, Mississippi and served as an alderman (1969–1973) and then mayor of Bolton (1973–1980) before being elected to the Hinds County Board of Supervisors, on which he served from 1980 to 1993.

Thompson began his grassroots political activism being a civil rights champion through the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) while a student at Tougaloo College – a private historically black college in Jackson, Mississippi.
